Updated on October 18, 2014

Horse Racing Movies You MUST see!

Horse-racing is an incredible sport to watch. The thrill of the race and the strength and beauty of the horses keep racing fans coming back to the track year after year. But when you can't make it out for a day at the races, what's the next best thing?

Anyone who considers them self a die-hard horse racing fan should see every one of these movies. If you're like me and you just can't get enough horseracing then you'll love these films. It's always fun to see how horseracing is portrayed by Hollywood, how our favorite tracks look on film (especially the old ones), and to reminisce about all the reasons we love the sport of kings to begin with.

A Day at the Races, The Marx Brothers (1937) - "Tutsi Fruitsy Ice Cream"

A must see for any serious racing fan, or anyone with a sense of humor.

Groucho plays Dr. Hackenbush, a vet posing as a doctor, who, along with a race horse owner and his friends struggle to help keep a sanitarium open with the help of a misfit racehorse. All of the exterior shots were filmed at Santa Anita Park.

This is seriously one of the most hilarious movies of all time, with such scenes as the famous "Tutsi Fruitsy Ice Cream" skit.

Seabiscuit (2003) - Nominated for 7 Oscars

Arguably the best horseracing movie ever made, Seabiscuit, the true story of the undersized Depression-era racehorse whose victories lifted not only the spirits of the team behind it but also those of their nation.

Much of the film was shot at Santa Anita Park and has some great shots of the track.

The First Saturday in May (2007) - The Hennegan Brothers

This fantastic documentary follows 6 trainers from across the United States as they work to get their horses to the Kentucky Derby. It's provides a wonderful perspective into the world of thoroughbred horse training and the tremendous amounts of work and sacrifice involved. Essential viewing for any horse-racing fan.

Secretariat (2010) - Disney

The unbelievable true story of the greatest racehorse of all time, the 1973 Triple Crown winner, Secretariat. This is a beautifully done film.

Let it Ride (1989)

He drinks. He smokes. He gambles. He curses. He thinks about committing adultery. You'll love him.

An average guy (Richard Dreyfuss) with a slight gambling problem has the kind of day at the racetrack that we all wish we could have every time we go.

Let It Ride was mostly filmed at Hialeah Park Race Track, which was closed in 2001.

The Killing - Directed by Stanley Kubrick

A team consisting of a corrupt cop, a betting window teller at the track, a sharpshooter to shoot the favorite horse during the race, distracting the crowd; a wrestler to provide another distraction by provoking a fight at the track bar, and the bartender attempt a daring heist in the money-counting room of a racetrack of two million dollars during a featured race,

Dreamer (2005) - Inspired by a True Story

Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story is a 2005 film starring Dakota Fanning and Kurt Russell, inspired by the true story of an injured Thoroughbred racehorse named Mariah's Storm.
